What are we all about?

Internal Combustion Engine Cooling. Engine efficiency, enhanced power production, greater fuel economy, reduced emissions, improved overall vehicle performance - utilizing the most innovative cooling technology available. Our systems use revolutionary new cooling technology to completely eliminate the many problems, inadequacies, and dangers of today's water based cooling systems. A brief outline follows:

All liquid cooled internal combustion engines are cooled by water-based solutions to remove heat from the engine. Most use an Anti-Freeze mixture to prevent freezing and raise the boiling point of the cooling system.  The Antifreeze most often used is Ethylene Glycol ("EG") which is highly toxic (poisonous). Currently conventional coolants are a mixture of Ethylene Glycol and water ("EGW"), A mixture which creates serious problems for which answers have been sought for many years. Because of the water content in EGW (usually 30% to 50%), engines which must be operated at high cooling system pressure (from 15 to 24 PSIG) are still subject to boil-over failures (when operated at high temperature or engine loads). Additionally, because of the high pressures, components such as; hoses, radiators, and heater cores are subject to bursting failures. Also water produces water vapor (steam bubbles) in large volumes, within the engine coolant jackets, which is the fundamental cause of engine "knock" which reduces fuel efficiency and engine power and causes "cavitation" (trapped vapor stalling of the coolant pump, flow loss, and metal fracturing), resulting in loss of coolant, coolant flow and premature engine damage. Finally, EGW requires periodic coolant level checks and replacement, and it is highly toxic.

There has been no practical answer to the problems of EGW until Jack Evans developed Evans NPGT as a revolutionary new coolant and cooling technology. A simple answer to all the problems of EGW cooling. NPGT is a highly effective alternate, using Propylene Glycol ("PG"), a safe food and pharmaceutical additive. Most importantly, this new coolant contains no water, hence it has been termed Non-Aqueous (water-free) propylene glycol ("NPG"T) It is covered by many Evans patents, both issued and pending, for both the NPGT coolant formulations and various system constructions which enhance the performance of the basic NPGT coolant.

Evans NPGT and now NPG+™ offer significant advantages over EGW coolants and propylene glycol water coolants ("PGW"), which are only slightly less toxic than EGW coolants. NPGT virtually eliminates overheating (it will never boil-over). When used as a replacement coolant in current systems there is a marked reduction of critical engine "Hot Spots" (the major cause of engine "knock"), increased power and fuel efficiency (From 5% to 15% by extensive company and independent tests). NPGT also eliminates virtually all cooling system corrosion (i.e.; rust and cavitation (vapor damage described earlier), and it is essentially non-toxic lifetime coolant (tested in excess of 500,000 miles). The coolant base PG is so safe that it is rated "Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS)" by the EPA, and it is not classified as a hazardous waste. Additional safe operation with an Evans NPGT system is a result of the coolant operates at a "No to Low system pressure," (from 0 to 7 PSIG) which means components will not be subjected to high pressure, as is used with EGW, (no "burst" failures) and there is significantly reduced danger of being burned by coolant spray if the cap is released.

Evans Waterless coolants are the future in engine cooling technology, which will be used in all internal combustion engines and vehicles to be manufactured in years to come. It is available to you now.

EVANS NPG COOLING is a new technology, a system initially developed for cooling race engines to reliably increase power. It does that and much more. It's a racing-tested engine cooling breakthrough! The technology is centered around a revolutionary new coolant, non-aqueous propylene glycol (NPG). In addition to our own race teams and testing programs, NPG technology has been proven in many different racing vehicles, street machines, trucks and motorcycles. Evans NPG has been run in 2000 HP drag cars, cross country vintage racers and big block modified cars. EVANS NPG has also been proven invaluable in many makes of liquid cooled Motorcycles; Exotic high horsepower racing bikes to 1500cc, 6 cylinder touring bikes.

Engines have the capacity of operating at much higher efficiencies which lead to higher power production. The limiting factor has always been the conditions imposed by water-based coolants, including low boiling point and excessive vapor generation. These conditions cause localized coolant boiling, vapor blanketing at hot spots and the resultant destructive detonation and pre-ignition. In some applications, coolant alone will improve fuel economy and reduce emissions; in others simple mechanical modifications may be required.

When vapor blankets the surface, water-based coolants lose their ability to absorb heat from the hot spots in the combustion chambers, leading to high metal temperature spikes well above critical levels. The result is loss of power from detonation or component structural failure from pre-ignition in the form of piston damage, head gasket failure, and/or warped or cracked heads.

Water-based coolant is operated near its boiling point. Cylinder liner cavitation erosion is caused by vibration-induced high frequency pressure changes at the metal-coolant interface. Coolant, near its boiling point, makes vapor bubbles that abruptly collapse against the metal surface, causing erosion of the metal. EVANS NPG Coolants contains no water and is not operated near its boiling point.

The boiling point of EVANS (non-aqueous propylene glycol) NPG Coolant is 370 degrees F (375°F for NPG+) in a non- or low-pressurized system. The coolant is normally controlled at conventional temperatures but functions perfectly well at higher temperatures, even considerably higher temperatures. Detonation/pre-ignition control and previously forbidden combustion chamber pressures and temperatures are no longer the danger they were to thermal engine efficiency and durability.

EVANS NPG™ & NPG+™ COOLANT
USES NO WATER, NO PRESSURE!

no h20Evans NPG Coolant is 100% inhibited Propylene Glycol. NPG+ a proprietary blend of glycols. Both maintain substantially vapor free, liquid - to - metal contact at all coolant temperature and engine loads. By bathing the entire combustion chamber with coolant 100% of the time, metal temperatures are controlled to such an extent that critical levels of detonation and pre-ignition are never reached. Because NPG's naturally high 370 degree F boiling point, (375°F for NPG+) the need for adding high pressure to the cooling system is eliminated. Without pressure (or low pressure, i.e. 2 to 7psi) in the system, gasket seals, hose connections, and even the radiator core, operate safer and longer. Environmental Impact of Evans Cooling Systems

We'd like to stress that while this site and the Evans Cooling Systems (known simply as "ECS or EVANS" throughout much of the site) technology would appear to target only high performance vehicles, the impact of this technology is just as profound in family vehicles, sports utility, and quite simply, everyday modes of personal transportation. Our new cooling technology is vital to anyone who has ever experienced performance deficiencies with their vehicles. This might include slight operational decay that, in time, can cause significant engine wear and damage - to - performance problems such as common engine detonation "knock" and overheating.

!!!   However, perhaps the most significant and important benefit of our cooling technologies resides in the environmental soundness of the coolant itself! The overwhelming majority of the engine coolant used throughout the world is extremely hazardous to all life! Our NPG is environmentally sound. How often have you seen a vehicle overheating, dumping coolant into the land? This is poison that is being lost into the environment. The elimination of these toxic chemicals on a global scale is yet another important problem to be considered.

The common "anti-freeze" or coolant used in all engines today is Ethylene Glycol.
Ethylene Glycol is a known carcinogen and must be treated as hazardous waste.

Non Aqueous Propylene Glycol has been classified non-hazardous by OSHA and DOT.
In fact, Propylene Glycol is widely used as a food additive.

Another tremendous environmental advantage to using our cooling technology lay in the increased performance. Quite simply, because engine efficiency is increased, less fuel is required. This of course means better fuel economy, the consumption of fossil fuel is decreased. Finally, because of the way in which the system operates higher combustion pressure and temperatures result in a highly efficient explosion in the cylinder. This directly reduces the pollution that makes its way out of the tail pipe!

While we strive to increase engine performance and efficiency, it is the environmental importance of our NPG Cooling System that we hope will convince those of you, not ordinarily interested in peak performance, to consider our alternative.
